My daughter LOVES this book. Great oictures and great information.

Little Guy loves visiting the zoo, farms, pet stores and more. DK Canada has a great selection of books in their All Creatures Great and Small Boutique that seemed like it would cover a wide variety of animals. And it did!The cover was colourful with a mixture of real and drawn picture of various animals. It invited opening up to see what was inside. The boarding used for the covers was slightly padded, making it nicer for holding. The contents are divided between four categories: All About Animals, Amazing Animals, Animal Antics and More Very Important Animals. Now, while Gramma is a front to back reader, Little Guy is not. There is an attached bookmark to keep your place if you do manage to read front to back!The first few passes through, he just picked pages at random, looking at pictures and stopping at what caught his eye. Subsequent readings slowed down. We would finish looking at each double paged entry. He happily pointed out those he recognized. The entries are a mixture of actual photos and drawings. The majority are photos, which Gramma preferred. The drawing are well done though and not 'cartoonish'. Little Guy loves 'interesting things.' (Yes he actually calls it that) It can be something he finds outside or something he learns. There are many interesting things to be learned in the entries of this book. Gramma learned too - did you know that Dalmatian puppies are born white and only acquire their spots as they grow? And a few new names for groups of animals....a flamboyance of flamingos, a prickle of porcupines.The publisher recommends for ages 4-8. Best suited for the younger end of that I think. Thumbs up from both Little Guy and Gramma. Gramma's only dither is the title. I'm not sure about the VIP, but have no alternatives suggestions. Still, it was what was inside that counted.

I found this book in my own CBT project, as I understand trough my history that I get more in tune with weight loss when I'm reading about it.Weight loss is barely mentioned and emotional eating is approached in the context of emotional regulation and awareness. I am eating somewhat less after reading this book (which I'm reading again, something I NEVER do) but I'm not dieting. It makes sense and feels right.I'm a CBT therapist and got really interested in this approach and techniques. I already see myself teaching some of them to my clients.

I have read this book twice in the last few months. No! It will not solve your problems. Yes! This book is great. This is a great addition to anyone receiving professional help or if doing it on your own, it is a must read in your personal library of self-help books. Emotional eating broken down into layman's terms and every page is chock full of insight and knowledge.

The author clearly explains each point in detail. The information given in this book actually can help with other issues in one's life, not only with eating disorders. End Emotional Eating provides not only immediate help but hope that can be realised by implementing the suggested steps. I strongly encourage those seeking effective strategies for intervention to BUY THIS BOOK!!!

I am actually still reading it. It almost feels like it was written for me! I have a notebook and I am doing every question/exercise. I have read several other books on emotional eating, but this one has been very helpful.

This book really helped change my thinking and attitude about emotions, and not just regarding emotional eating, but emotions of all kinds. The explanations, imagery, examples... it's so helpful. 33 years of negative self talk... take that!!

I am reading through this book slowly and engaging in many of the activities she suggests. I plan on re-reading it as soon as I finish because I really want to continue to assimilate a Mindful, Thoughtful way of being into my entire life.

One of the best books I have read on dealing with emotional eating! I recommend it often to my clients! I have lost 220lbs and it has helped me a great deal in my journey!

The book points out the futility of aid to and though the government or the parallel NGOs

A strange title for a book that sums up one of the problems of USA's intervention in Central America. Central American governments often apply their U.S. military aid to curtail any progressive social change and to reinforce their repressive government. Elvia Alvarado, a courageous Honduran woman that many would dismiss as simply a rabble-rouser is actually solving what many consider the main problem of the former banana republic countries. The small wealthy class owns most of the land to the extent that there is a large landless peasant "campesino" class. An agrarian reform law was passed in Honduras to lawfully award small sections of large unproductive estates to the campesinos to overcome this injustice in land ownership. The average campesino is ignorant of this law or their country's legal system. The situation really seems hopeless, but Elvia and selected leaders received training sponsored by the Catholic Church. The course trains them to organize the campesinos to demand their rights. The Campesino struggle is similar to the civil rights marches in the American South. They might be legally correct through a slow acting legal system, but they often meet the spontaneous violence of the local authorities before they gain legal access..Other interesting points brought out by this book is the oppressive condition of women in campesino society. If a solid family structure is the building block of a healthy society then this is a failed society. Elvia's own story and others she alludes to demonstrates the disruption of family and the displacement of children brought about by beatings and live-in conditions offered women when no other alternative is available. I do not have any first hand knowledge of poverty to this degree, but I believe this is a good book (explanation) to try and understand why poverty still exists in some countries even though they have been the beneficiaries of large amounts of international aid. There was not too much of the text that dealt with "the Gringo" except to say that as the U.S. brought pressure to bear upon Nicaragua, repression by Honduran troops also ratcheted up. Other than that it is really an interesting account of a brave woman standing up for her rights. Well worth the read.

Good insight into the experience of the Honduran campesino (and more to the point, the campesina) in the 1970s and 80s. I imagine that while not 100% of it applies today (the political and military situations in the US, Russia, and Central America have changed since then), some of it remains very relevant. What Alvarado has to say about the effects of poverty, solutions to social issues, the challenges and benefits of organizing and empowering the women in the communities, and the culture are likely still as fresh as the day she said them. A bonus for me was that having read Ryszard Kapuscinski's account of the Soccer War (twice), I appreciated reading about the conflict from her completely different point of view.Benjamin did a great job of maintaining Alvarado's voice and the flow of the storytelling - note that Benjamin is credited as "translator" rather than "author," as her goal was to preserve and publish Alvarado's thoughts. While the subject matter is serious, Alvarado frequently shows her sense of humor, and it was a fairly quick read. I can't say I agree with all the theoreticals espoused by the subject, but Alvarado's narrative helped me understand why she felt that way, so I feel it was successful.

When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras from 1987-89, I wish I had read this book. Had I done so, I might have changed the way I did some of my work.Don't Be Afraid, Gringo had just come out when I completed my training in May 1987. Had I been more persistent and read the book back then, I might have been a better volunteer and tried some different approaches other than the standard stuff. As a literacy promoter working on the North Coast and in the Aguan Valley, I worked with some of the same types of peasant cooperatives that are discussed in the book. I often didn't know intimately what these peasants were going through. Yes, I spent time in various cooperatives doing my literacy work. I'd chat with community leaders, maybe do some training or projects with the literacy teachers. But I never really got to the heart of the matter. This book took me there. It answered many of my lingering questions.The book not only takes you inside the campesino movement, but also takes you deep inside the feelings, customs, and everyday struggles of the poorest peasants in Honduras. Many saw the more outspoken peasants as troublemakers, when in fact, all they wanted was a good meal to eat.If you're thinking about traveling to Central America -- or you are planning to do work there -- this book is still very relevant and important. Though many changes have occurred in Honduras over the years, many things still remain the same.

Having lived in Honduras for almost two years, I have seen the poverty of which Elvia speaks. I also had an uncle who was an activist like Elvia. This book does a wonderful job at showing how difficult it is to rise above poverty in a third world nation and how unorganized and corrupt these governments are. The honesty of her words made it all too real.I highly recommend this book! Current political situtations have changed since the publication of this book, so I don't recommend using it for research papers, etc.

Because it's a testimonial and translation, this book is told in a very simple, straighforward way that a lot of people could probably read and understand easily. It's an eye-opening and inspiring read which I would definitely recommend.

I have worked and reworked multiple recipes according to specific directions from this book. What I mean by reworking is not about my technique, I have been baking for quite some time, but on the different methods which Nicole suggests. She give you her ingredient list for her mock Better Batter flour and then to make bread flour out of it you will need to purchase modified tapioca starch from expandex and also unflavored whey protein isolate from NOW food brands. I made the purchase which costs me 30 bucks extra, pretty expensive.... I did several of her recipes so far and none have worked for me. What worked was the flavor and that was all, there was no softness in the bread what so ever. The breads will come out a bit soft of course but then as it stood in the counter the harder it got. I did the soft white sandwich bread, sour dough and english muffins. All of the recipes were precisely measured in grams and it was followed very closely on rise times. For instance on the sandwich bread alone I went from slow rise in the fridge of 12 hours to close to 4 days to see the difference and there was none except for flavor. I was able to have the bread rise to double the size in my proofing bucket and when it was ready I kneaded it a bit just like she describes in her video as well. The dough felt more like an actual wheat dough where it was spongy and so I put it in the exact size loaf pan she recommends and put it in my proofing box at 75 degrees and it rose to the top just like she said it would. I baked it according to her specs and sure enough the bread would come out very impressive, just like her pictures in the book. To me I love presentation with my food so to see a nice big loaf come out looking like that I was very exited. I waited till it cooled off completely and I noticed it was getting harder. I made sandwiches with them and found the bread to be to tough. It was edible but my stomach was not having it, I was having stomach pains because I could not digest it. I tried many times thinking the longer it sits the softer it might get, wrong... All it did was make it more tasty but still tough. I went as far as thinking perhaps its her recipe of all purpose flour being a problem, I bought the expensive flours that she suggests to buy and not Bob's redmill but it was still something I needed to double check on so I bought better batter flour and used the whey protein and expandex starch. I made the bread the same way and it came out the same way which was tough bread. I would love to do a video based on my technique and her recipes so that folks can possibly point out what I am doing wrong based on the average star rating for this book but I am very OCD so I always double check my measurements and temps of ingredients. My ingredients are all room temperature and water is never above 110 degrees and never below 105 and everything is measured in grams.

I am rating this cookbook 5 stars. It is more involved than her previous 2 cookbooks but just as straightforward and easy to follow. One thing that jumped out at me is that the recipes in this cookbooks take time. For those of us who use her previous cookbook Gluten-Free on a Shoestring, Quick and Easy: 100 Recipes for the Food You Love--Fast!that focused on quick and easy recipes that may be a shock. Good bread takes time. Many of the recipes in this cookbook are going to have a proofing time of 12 hours up to 5 days.Another major difference with this cookbook is that she uses more than just a basic all purpose gluten free flour in most her recipes in this cookbook. She several different blends of flour: gluten free bread flour, high quality all-purpose gluten-free flour, make it simpler all purpose gluten free flour, basic gum-free gluten free flour, whole grain gluten free flour, and gluten free pastry flour. These seem easy to mix with just a couple of things added to your basic all purpose gluten free flour. Which flour blend you use depends on the recipe you are making. This was slightly disappointing to me because I could not jump right in and start making some of the recipes. I need to order a couple of things in order to make the bread flour. There are some recipes towards the back of the cookbook that do use a basic all purpose gluten free flour.The cookbook is simple to follow with some photos. Each recipe does not have a photo but there are quite a few in the book. There are quite a few photos in the section of the book where she illustrates shaping the dough which I greatly appreciate. I have made the recipe for Glazed Yeast-Raised Donuts found in the book but I used Better Batter with not addition in place of the Gluten Free Bread Flour and they were delicious. I bet they would be even better if I have made the bread flour that the recipe calls for....oh well, what can I say I am a kitchen rebel!The back of the book has some resources to help you figure out where to get some of the things mentioned in the cookbook. It also has a wonderful index which I find myself using all of the time in her previous cookbooks.

I'm an experienced bread baker, but I have to say, this book is far more intensive than I imagined. For the novice baker going gluten-free, this is not the best place to start. The recipes call for special ingredients that I cannot locally source, and they require one to three days advanced planning. I've chosen several things I wanted to make and found that they wouldn't be ready to bake until long after I needed or wanted them. I hope that when I get to complete something, the results will as remarkable as the author proclaims. I'm not sure how many people will have the time and patience to plan in advance for that coveted slice of bread. I considered returning the book but decided it will be a helpful resource on my cookbook shelf.

My wife is sick of it, but every day my 4-year old requests "the body book" for her bedtime story. Sometimes my 2-year old even requests it. It's definitely not written at that age level, but the pictures are fantastic and the explanations can be rephrased to make it more interesting for younger kids. It's much better than cartoon depictions of human anatomy which don't quite paint the correct picture. The book has everything in the human body so yes, there are some pages we avoid as we're not quite ready to talk through those in detail. The book is also made to last and still reads like new after a couple months of owning it.I highly recommend this book. My kids are having a blast with their newfound fascination for the human body... and I'm glad it has replaced their previous favorite topic (sewers).

I got this for my son because hes become very interested in his body. Why the f$^@*!& does a book by Smithsonian have an anatomically incorrect illustration of the human body? In other words where is the foreskin?? Why is this normal, biologically important part of the body just completely left out? I'm returning the book, I'm not keeping something that is going to teach my kids that it in order to be "normal" they have to have a piece of their body cut off.

I am buying these Smithson books, for my grandson, for his required reading logs for school. He is 7 years old, in second grade, and is an advanced reader. He really enjoys these books, and looks forward to more.

I purchased this book to use while homeschooling my 4 year old, and it is amazing. I love all of the detailed pictures and descriptions that aren't over my head. It is a great tool to help him learn about the body and its functions since he wanted to go more into depth about it.

Amazing illustrations and computer generated representation of the human body inside and out. Covers damn near everything you can think of in extremely fine detail with explanations of everything. At the very least a conversation piece for coffee table. Looks MUCH more expensive than just $20. Get it. Not just for children, in fact, probably not mainly for kids.

So far all is well with this book. Getting my son into learning about the human anatomy, as others have mentioned it does show male and female parts so caution when showing little kids this book if you're not ready to teach them that yet. The thing I don't like is on page 153 it talks about the pelvis and “how we evolved from four legged ape like creatures”... Excuse me, WHAT?? I will be crossing this text out as that is not what I believe and don’t think it should be published in an educational book aimed at teaching about the anatomy of the human body. Aside from this major issue, however the book has very nice illustrations and you can easily break down for younger kids, my son is almost six. Pages are large and have colorful pictures. This is enough for me to keep the book, however if you read this and are concerned, go through the book before you give it to your child so that you can block certain things out if you need to.

This book is AWESOME not only for children, but adults as well. This book is so beautifully iillustrated and has so much information packed into such a sturdy book. I expect nothing less from the Smithsonian. I am very pleased.

I bought this book for my 8 year old son and while he's interested, it may be a bit advanced for him. But that's ok, because it's something we can use for a long time as he continues to learn. The information is very detailed and the pictures are very good. High quality printing.

I am a roller derby referee, "Willy Callit," having gotten my start with the Lonestar Rollergirls of Texas, the league that began the modern roller derby revival. I am currently an independent roller derby referee in the Pacific Northwest.Ms. Mabe and Speck press have produced a beautifully photographed and well researched book on the origins of derby through the modern (mostly) flat track revival. This book is the one a skater should hand her family when asked, "Roller derby? Why on earth do you want to do that?"That said, it's essentially a coffee table book, scaled down. Those actually involved in the sport will be disappointed in its relatively simplistic treatment of material. A particular peeve of mine is that many of the skaters in the photos, many of whom are personal friends, are not adequately identified in either the text or captions. Although not really relevant to a book of this scope I'm disappointed that the skaters did not get more recognition beyond "Strong Rollergirl."But of course, this is clearly not what the book is trying to be. This book is for the individual who attends one or two bouts, or has friends who attend on a casual basis, and wants to know more. It's for those who have vague recollection of sitting in front of the Philco black and white set on weekends watching the mixed-gender old schoolers tear it up and want to find out what happened to the sport in the intervening forty years or so. It's for those otherwise unfamiliar who want to get a feel for what the sport of Derby is about, as well as a little bit of eye candy along the way.As such, it works well and I consider it an excellent addition to my collection. But I will not likely be re-reading it, more likely I will be loaning it to those benighted individuals among my cronies and co-workers who simply don't get what all of the derby fuss is about. For that purpose, I'd rate it top notch.

This book was a great read giving the history of roller derby as well as discussing the culture and game of roller derby today! Read it.

It has now been more than four weeks since I ordered this product from someone or other on Amazon.com ...... and frankly I just cannot believe the quoted delivery time to get a small parcel from one civilised English speaking democracy to another, US to Australia has now taken over a month and it is still not here !! AND I can't make any comment about delivery until the 'quoted' delivery time is exceeded, which is another month !!! Give me strength ......... two months for one little paperback from America to Australia.As for the book ...... I am sure that it will be great but I can barely remember what I bought ........Sorry .... trying to be helpful, American suppliers on Amazon can be very US centric ...... the rest of the world just doesn't seem to exist for them yet ........ PS: I hope this post is removed, by someone actually paying attention, before it gets to air.

There's no sources referenced in the book. The parts on the classic roller derby (common noun, as it touches on a number of flavors) gets things horribly wrong.My best guess is that Mabe sourced those parts of the book from the sketchy histories of the sport found on various leagues' web sites. And not from the three-plus well-written books on the history of the sport. One of which is currently back in print, and another which I found available at the local public library.Let's see, contrary to what she says the Transcontinental Roller Derby started off skating on a banked track, not a flat track. RollerJam did not have an alligator pit, that was Rollergames. When an author isn't sure of the answers, the best place to find them isn't Google. It's through research. Read Five Strides on the Banked Track, Roller Derby to RollerJam or A Very Simple Sport.

I absolutely love this book!I have been playing roller derby for almost 3 years and never have I found something that so completely and beautifully illustrates what this sport is to me and what I love about it-- I feel like I need to keep it with me at all times so I can show it to strangers who ask me about derby. The book explains it so much better than I can.The pictures are gorgeous, and obviously shot and selected by people who know and love derby. Granted, it is a coffee table book, but for someone who wants to know what roller derby is but doesn't have the time to commit to a novel and just wants to get the basic gist and leaf through pages and pages of phtographic eye candy, this book is perfect. This book is a must-have for any derby girl or derby fan, or family member or friend who wants to know what all the fuss is about.Catherine Mabe knows derby, knows the derby community, and in general just knows what she's talking about. Her book is lovely. Buy it!
