Born Eleanora Fagan in 1915 in Philadelphia to a 13-year-old mother, Billie Holiday first listened to jazz on a Victrola in a whorehouse, in exchange for working as a maid. Her memoir chronicles her rise from poverty to stardom during the Jim Crow years and her addiction to heroin, of which she died in 1959 at the age of 44. In the introduction to this book, lyricist David Ritz argues the "truthfulness" of Billie Holiday's autobiography. Are all of the details strictly factual? No, history has shown us that some of them were embellished. But the underlying pathos and poignance of her words are undeniably real and reveal the true heart of this woman, perhaps the greatest jazz singer to ever live. Read this book as you would read poetry, and enjoy it for its tender and stirring depth, its insights into a bygone era, and, yes, its emotional honesty.

I gave this book four stars because when I read about the inaccuracies and false stories in her memoir I just didn't know how to approach the book. I wanted to read a factual version of her life but I settled for thinking of this book as a work of fiction inspired by the life of Billie Holiday. Reading from another source and confirmed by the book, I learned that this talented woman had a fascinating but tragic existence due to personal abuse with drugs, men, and the injustice of society due to racism and being a woman. It was also tragic how hard she worked and was consistently swindled monetarily from the people (often men) who were suppose to have her best interest professionally at heart. She died with only change in her bank account and an insignificant amount of money on her person (not in the book). I also gave the book four stars because I had some difficulties understanding the urban lingo of the time period, often becoming confused because there wasn't additional explanation for some of the slang used. Overall, the book was an interesting read but a disappointment as far as accuracy.

William Dufty presents Holiday's biography in her own voice. She is unflinching in describing the difficulties and triumphs of her life. Though she doesn't particularly stress it, her musical achievement is impressive. One gets the sense that she was uncompromising in acknowledging her identity as a Black woman--sometimes exploited, but just as often standing up for herself. She refuses to be pigeonholed by promoters, associates, the press, or her fans. She acknowledges her addiction to heroin and decries how it came to label her and her experiences with the law enforcement community. She emphasizes her strong desire to get clean and stay clean, in spite of the difficulty of her struggle.

This was a great book. Although I've heard all of it might not be true, it's still a captivating book. What I liked most about it is that I actually took and keep to heart some very wonderful quotes that Billie said that really touched me and helped me face some things in my own life. If your expecting a full biography about her life then you might want to read a different book. This was written by her only up to a certain time in her life, so it's by no means a full biography. . . However, she tells some amazing stories about her life and how she came to be from her point of view, which I thought made a wonderful read. I think this is great book to start reading if you have the initial spark of interest in Billie Holiday's life. Keeps you interested and wanting to read more about her!

I have always loved Billie Holiday, her voice was so distinctive. My favorite song is God Bless the Child thats Got Its On. The book Lady Sings the Blue was so different from the movie featured decades ago. This book told her entire life story growing up in Baltimore. It explains the relationship with her mother, and the addictions she had that landed her in and out of jail.. I enjoyed the stories of her road trips. The author made you feel you were right there on the tour bus, and in the sleazy hotels. If you are a Billie Holiday fan, or a old blues fan, you will enjoy this book.

"Everyone's got to be different. You can't copy anybody and end up with anything. If you copy, it means you're working without real feeling. And without feeling, whatever you do amounts to nothing." Billie Holiday knew a thing or two about feeling. At ten, she was sent to jail because a forty-year-old man tried to rape her. From her hardscrabble youth on the streets of Baltimore to touring the country as a blues, swing, and jazz singer, she faced discrimination and ignorance everywhere. The South is often made the scapegoat for racism in this country, but in the thirties and forties, in Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia, and even New York, she had trouble getting hotel rooms, eating in restaurants, and often had to enter the venue in which she was performing through the back door, even when most of her entourage was white. And she was constantly dogged by federal agents once it became known that she was a heroin addict. "Lady Sings the Blues" is the remarkable story of Holiday's rise to stardom and decline into addiction. The book is written by William Dufty and David Ritz, but the street-wise voice is all Holiday's. Among many other things - and of most interest to me - "Lady Sings the Blues" is also a cry for legalization, or at least decriminalization of drugs. Back in 1955, she was comparing the addict dependent on a substance with a diabetic dependent on insulin. The same comparisons are still made today but to no avail. She said addicts are sick people who need medical treatment, not jails and prisons. She must be turning in her grave to see that absolutely nothing has changed in 56 years. In fact, it's only gotten worse. She's shocked when she tours Europe and sees how addiction is treated there: "Nobody has to risk his life by going to the black market and paying a hundred bucks for something worth four cents - and then getting stuff so bad it's liable to kill you. There's little if any black-marketing or profiteering. People don't have to go out shoplifting, mugging, or robbing one another to get money to buy stuff this way." Sadly, she was never able to overcome her addiction. As she says, "There isn't a soul on earth who can say for sure that their fight with dope is over until they're dead." Billie Holiday was a beautiful but tormented soul who lived her art. Her highs were heavenly and her lows were hellish nightmares. I know what you want, but this isn't it. I too have read many of the "How to ..." hotrod books, and they deal with the options available for different design issues and detailed info for choosing components. Not this book, however - it is a reprint of magazine articles and deals ONLY with what they did for this particular car. Worse, at least 40% of the information is a simple reprint of different manufacturer's "fact sheets" which you could download from their web site (if you even wanted the information). The photos are all Black&White, and the text is washed out from cheap printing.Not is the same league as any of the How To books I have used for car, engine, chopper builds etc.

This book is definitely NOT a guide or a how-to, nor should you expect to really learn anything about the tri-fives themselves, save a few tidbits about manufacturers data (e.g. number of units made, body styles available) and even that information is paltry. If I were to summarize the book, I'd call this a glorified magazine article with inadequate black & white photos thrown in for filler. Further, the book is primarily a journey following the build of a '55 Chevy for a road tour show. It will show you *what* they chose to do to modify the vehicle, but there is little information as to *why* they chose it, instead it's a plug for the companies they chose to work with. An interesting read if that's your expectation, but it is hardly "A guide to building a tri-five Chevy". Very disappointing.

The book is essentially a fluff book. If you have $100K to spend on your build then this is the book for you. When they start with a replacement chassis you know that this isn't going to be cheap. While the title is correct to some extent it lacks the substance for having a great deal of real useable advice for the home garage builder. If you have the budget buy it and enjoy. If not invest in catalogs from Eckler and Year One, spend your money wisely and have a good time building your car.

About the Author

J. F. Powers (1917-1999) was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, and studied at Northwestern University while holding a variety of jobs in Chicago and working on his writing. He published his first stories in The Catholic Worker and, as a pacifist, spent thirteen months in prison during World War II. Powers was the author of three collections of short stories and two novels—Morte D’Urban, which won the National Book Award, andWheat That Springeth Green—all of which have been reissued by New York Review Books. He lived in Ireland and the United States and taught for many years at St John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.Denis Donoghue is University Professor at NYU, where he holds the Henry James Chair of English and American Letters. THE STORIES OF J.F. POWERS is a book to treasure. Powers died in 1999, but his reputation as perhaps the greatest comic chronicler of the 1950s Catholic Church endures. He published only five books in a career that spanned over five decades. Three of them were slim collections of short stories,all of which are included in this handsome volume. The other two were novels. The first, MORTE D'URBAN, a book I have read and reread at least four times, each time with much chuckling and great enjoyment, won the National Book Award in 1962. The second, WHEAT THAT SPRINGETH GREEN (1988), I read just a few years ago. Again,much chuckling, a pure pleasure to read.Because he was a perfectionist, Powers worked slowly. His resulting stories were, to my mind, perfect. His subject? The Catholic Church, its clergy and religious, and its faithful members in the mid-twentieth century Midwest. In these stories his priests, nuns and parishioners are presented in thoroughly human terms, warts and all. Catholics from that era cannot help but relate. They will smirk, smile, chuckle, guffaw. The humor sneaks up on you, surprises you into laughter.I can remember, as a child, seeing Powers' first book, PRINCE OF DARKNESS AND OTHER STORIES (1947), a slim paperback in a rack of religious books and pamphlets in the back of our church. My mother, always an avid reader, must have bought it, because I discovered it in our home bookcase my senior year of high school. One story and I was hooked. I probably didn't realize it then, but I had discovered buried treasure.I am so pleased that NYRB has made all of Powers' stories finally available in a single volume. I had read his final collection, HOW THE FISHES LIVE (1975), but not the middle one. THE PRESENCE OF GRACE (1956). Now I have, and I will continue sampling these stories for a long time. It's the kind of book you can open anywhere, to any story. Every one is perfect, complete, a finely polished gem. My highest recommendation.- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER

For this review I concentrate on J. F. Power’s priestly stories which comprise two thirds or so of the book’s contents. The tribulations of the Roman Catholic priesthood is a major concern of fiction.Powers was admired by his literary peers for his proficiency in the short story. One of his two novels won a National Book Award, but he is generally considered a short fiction master who occasionally turned out a novel than vice versa.In the major elements of fiction writing he is adept. He gives his characters a presence; he renders settings with clarity and impact; and bestows on the milieu his tales takes place in, a strong sense of authenticity. He has been called a writer’s writer, a praise that signifies a close study of his works helps one learn the craft of story writing.An overview of the priestly stories suggest to me Powers is a pessimist about the efficacy of the vocation at the parish level. He is not the first Roman Catholic to reprove his/her church. Joyce comes to mind in that regard. Only Powers’ imparts an aura not so much of distaste but of regret. Here are men of the cloth who want to fulfill the broader duties of compassion and succor to the laity but find themselves mired in intra politics and convention. The incidents of conflict are small in scale but large in implication. Story after story of petty intrigue and contention add up to a bleak regard of priesthood functioning at a parochial level. Despite the amount of detail pertinent to the nitty-gritty of parish activity, the stories emanate I get an impression of corporate politics in priestly garb. Yet the author’s tone isn’t scathing; more a brooding contemplation such as suggested by the painting of Jesus pondering Jerusalem from a hill side. Powers, like any pessimist, is a disappointed idealist.I think the collection is rather uneven because “Moonshot” is formatted as a one act play, and “Folks” in the form of a short letter between a preface and an after word is puzzling as to how a reader is to take it.A brief comment on the author. Powers never wore a priest’s cloth, though he did attend Catholic seminary and worked in a Catholic associated university. He included several priests among his best friends. From comments by those who knew him I gather he wasn’t a constant writer in the sense of Trollope with his one thousand words a day timed to two hundred and fifty words every quarter hour. Rather Powers was a fitful writer whose stints at composition occurred between intervals of sundry activities. One started on a story though he was dogged in its completion. He revised copiously until, as his daughter put it, the pile of pages had the density of a plank. Between stories he wrote miles of letters. His daughter Katherine has compiled them in a book the title of which– Suitable Accommodations – comes from a favorite expression of her father who was rather nomadic in his choice of residences.. Her preface provides considerable background on a well loved father. From it I drew the above remarks.

Beforehand I'd just like to say that I am a priest and that this review is written from that perspective.These stories focus of priestly life of the mid-twentieth century. They include many details and insights into certain realities of what priests do. In particular, the in which he is able to express the interpersonal interactions between priests is very interesting. He has hit the nail on the head in many ways, one example being the awkward interactions between the Bishop and a priest in the story "Zeal." The Bishop finds that he just can't get away from Fr. Early fast enough and yet he then goes looking for him. He's uncomfortable around him, yet he misses him when he's gone.Also, in "A Losing Game," Powers has put into words what many priests have felt when looking for things for their rooms. In this story, the pastor of the parish keeps everything (i.e., tables, chairs, and other furniture) hidden away, so that no one can use it. The way in which the junior priest finally manages to get the easy chair he wants really does communicate the odd style of passive communication that so many priests use amongst each other for various reasons.Powers overall does an excellent job in showing certain aspects of priestly life of which people are often unaware. I recommend these short stories to anyone who wants to understand priestly culture better. In particular, I think that many priests will find these stories quite amusing and relatable.

If you’re looking for a purely neuroscientific journal alone, or someone’s memoir, or just some inspiration to help you reach out to someone afflicted —- this is not your book. But if you want all three you will be grateful for reading this remarkable book. I wanted to dislike it — because I’ve read almost everything on addiction, one of my continuing puzzles about human existence — but I just couldn’t put it down. Right to the last sentence, on the last page, I was compelled to think in new ways. In fact, her last line really shows how completely she has grasped the tragedy of addiction: (speaking of how to cure it) “While we’re at it, instead of wringing our hands, we might try reaching for another’s.” Powerful stuff.

I read on Kindle the Table of Contents or Chapter headings in advance of receiving my copy and VERIFIED my suspicion that the author most likely knows nothing of the importance of feedback and control mechanisms of electrical circuitry in the human brain or in the electronics now capable of functioning intelligently and mimicking human capacities to some degree. I am disappointed in advance that this is just another personal memoir, like the one I have been planning to write for many years about how parental and sibling abuse and neglect fosters misbehavior, anti-social characteristics and ultimately, the desire and needcto live in a world disconnected from reality and insulated from pain by neurochemical imbalances. I hope there is at least some intelligent discussions around neurotransmitters, so I’m tentatively upgrading my review from two stars to three of them. The author has her PhD in psychology and so has functioned successfully in a University environment. The fact that she has her Doctorate could just be University faculty & scholars doing their best to promote and aggrandize their own credentials and political agenda, or, I hope that there is really some valuable insight into what environmental and genetic factors cause or foster a predisposition to addictions, and how the average or general person can surmount personal obstacles.

I found Grisel’s ability to synthesize so many coherent pieces of addiction and neuroscience into a whole spellbinding. I have worked both personally and professionally with addiction for over 30 years and learned long ago the complexity of treating addiction. Stigma, moral judgements and secrecy prevent open discussion among most people grappling with addiction. Historically, moral overtones predicates science in the discussion of addiction. Grisel’s clarity in explaining neuroscience and her experience of addiction gave this reader a telescope with a more informed lens.

Outstanding book and research work being done on drugs and addiction - for those who want the details. The author does not dumb it down too much for the reader which I greatly appreciate. I want to know the biological/neurological processes taking place and why but there is still so much to learn.Thank you, Dr. Grisel!

This was a super interesting book that had loads of detail on what happens in the addicts brain depending on the drug. I am in awe of this authors ability to come out of deep addiction to study and teach about the brain and addiction. She is also very humble and acknowledge s there is still much to learn but expands on things that do work for addicts (support in groups of others etc..) highly recommend this book but you have to be willing to grind through some scientific terminology and detail.

As I began reading this great book, I thought, "Finally." Over the years, I have read so many misapprehensions of the role of dopamine in addiction. It is regularly presented as the "pleasure chemical", when in fact, its role is to 1) make one notice/remember a rewarding experience, and 2) drive one to seek out the source of pleasure (in this case, drugs, but it could be food, sex or anything that activates the brain's reward system).A former addict herself, and clean for three decades, Grisel begins with a brief overview of her own history as a user. She clearly explains the mechanisms of tolerance, withdrawal, and craving (the big three of addiction), before dedicating separate chapters to drugs such as stimulants, alcohol, marijuana, opioids, and tranquilizers. Despite their similarities, drugs affect the brain in idiosyncratic ways. For example, whereas a stimulant like cocaine works by directly increasing alertness, caffeine achieves the same goal by "blocking drowsiness", a subtle but important distinction.She concludes with a heartfelt and often philosophical approach to "solving addiction." While she freely admits that she doesn't have the answers, she presents a framework for how society can work together on this scourge,.Finally, while the book would probably be considered "popular" science, at times I found Grisel's style dense and academic. I don't mean this negatively in any way, in fact, I prefer this sort of science writing. As someone with a 30 year history in psychology, as undergrad, grad student, and now teacher, I sometimes had to re-read sections to fully understand them. At least a cursory background in neuroscience would certainly enhance one's enjoyment!

Highly recommended. Blending her personal story with serious science, neuroscientist and researcher Judith Grisel introduces the reader to core concepts in addiction - how it happens, why we get addicted, and how various drugs work on the brain. With her gripping personal story threaded throughout, she speaks both personally and professionally to all those who would understand this modern day scourge.

This is a very honest autobiography of an extroardinary woman. Madame Sirleaf doesn't include many specific dates such as her birthdate but nevertheless guides the reader through a honest protrait of her life. She discusses the hardships of her tribal and mixed race origins, as well as the elite Americo-Liberian background she was born into as the daughter of a lawmaker and teacher. She talks honestly about her strained marriage which she entered into at age 17. She even relates how her pocessive husband put a gun to her head inorder to control her. Yet she managed to leave her husband, despite having four boys to raise and pursue her career as an economist and technocrate. A brilliant and confident woman who refused to except her nations and genders limitations, refuse to give up her beliefs despite being jailed and threatened by brutal dictators, would go on to become a folk hero in her native land and revered throughout the world. Sirleaf worked for and ruffled the feathers of every President she worked for in Liberia from Tubman to Tolbert to Doe and Taylor in a span of nearly 40 years, until she herself at age 67 became the first woman to be elected President of an African nation. Her ability to rise through the male dominated Liberian and International Monetary culture, is what makes her story so compelling and an inspiration to women around the globe. And her ability to incorporate Liberia and her own legacy in an acurate historical perspective makes this an very important work for scholars around the world.

This review request is well-timed - my Book Club will talk about this book tonight and my opinion may be over-ridden. I looked forward to reading this book due to its timely subject (first female President in Africa) and timely subject matter (how a third world country was tossed into total chaos when "democracy" failed). Thus I encourage readers interested in female leadership and the fragility of political systems to read the book. My gripes with it are with how it is written, not what it is written about. First, the book contains "everything you ever wanted to know about Liberia and Ms. Sirleaf and much you don't need to know if you never knew anything about either Liberia or Ms. Sirleaf." In other words, in my opinion, Ms. Sirleaf needed a stronger editor, if not a ghost writer. The book is ponderous in sections ... I rarely "leaf through" a book; I did so at times with this book. Second, and important to me, Ms. Sirleaf did not convey an emotional sense of her journey. For example, she left her children with others while she attended schools and worked abroad, which surely would grip a mother with sadness. It is not conveyed. Further, she was imprisonedand in mortal danger from unstable political enemies, sufficient to terrorize most people (I'd think). She did not convey terror but rather tended to convey, more or less, that she was either "lucky" or felt "safe" in her gut. This while in a jail from which others routinely "disappeared!" I was left thinking that perhaps Ms. Sirleaf felt she had to always portray "strength," which no human being, save the disordered, can reasonably do at all times. Nor should any of us be expected to do so. Thousands upon thousands of Ms. Sirleaf's countrymen were killed by political leaders andwarmongers ... Ms. Sirleaf seemed to want to convey that she simply glided above the fray, always challenging and speaking truth to power, but somehow always surviving relatively unscathed, often rescued by the intervention of international colleagues or business acquaintances. She did not develop fully how those relationships came to be so strong either. I'm glad she survived, but I would have appreciated her conveying some sense of human vulnerability. (At one point, Ms. Sirleaf must be whisked out of the country under cover of darkness. I was reminded of Marie Antoinette and her family attempting to escape from Paris, an episode that had my heart racing as I read about it. Ms. Sirleaf crouching in the back of a car in her jeans? Shrug. The dangerous immediacy of the matter was not conveyed to me. It could have been.) Perhaps if Ms. Sirleaf had spent less time on Liberian history and statistics, she could have spent more time telling me about herself ... and not just her "resume." I came away feeling she sort of simply believed the title of her book - she was the child mentioned and she WOULD BE great! Check it off on the Bucket List! OK - but for someone who let me in to learn all sorts of (to me, modestly interesting) information about international banking and African inter-relationships, Ms. Sirleaf did NOT let me in to her feelings. Yet, the book is called a "Memoir," not a "History." I think it was in fact the latter - on both subjects - Liberia and Ms. Sirleaf.

I finished this ebook with a renewed respect for Pres. Johnson. The text and thoughts were very well composed and fluent. This book is a good read for anyone interested in the past, present and future direction of Liberia and Africa in general. Ms. Johnson spends valuable time and effort describing her unique and courageous views on Liberian policy and historical mistakes.On a trip to Liberia not too long ago, she was on my same flight and walked around the plane to greet me and the other passengers - I appreciated her down to earth attitude then, and even moreso now after reading this book. Her visceral account of the absolute horrors that have pillaged Liberia was gripping. She wrote it like she claims to live - without fear. I appreciated her blunt accounts of the attitudes of her countrymen - enemies and firiends. There were a very few passages that seemed self promoting and maybe a little grandiose, but Ms. Johnson is a politician, after all.

I read this book and The House on Sugar Beach to understand more about Liberia. Both are great books. This one is more educational than the other and highly enjoyable. I would give it 5 stars but there are a few places in the book that drag a bit and a few others that sound defensive, which I found slightly distracting. All the same, I highly recommend this book and I loved reading it. Inspirational.

Johnson's memoir was clear and candid. She focused a large part of her story on her financial and political career, perhaps rightly so, since she had just taken office at the time she started writing the memoir. She talked of various successes and challenges, and most impressively, took responsibility for some missteps and wrong judgements that she made along her journey, which is very unusual for most leaders. Her story is inspirational and will be for generations to come and is a must-read for all interested in gender and politics/power, African politics, African Development, the history of Liberia and civil wars in West Africa. Her tone throughout the book was however professional and slightly impersonal, which could be disappointing, especially when she was relating stories from her childhood and early adulthood.

About the Author

Redwood Kardon, who devised and wrote the first Code Check, is a former electrician and building inspector for the city of Oakland, CA. Coauthor Douglas Hansen is a general contractor and certified combination inspector with over 25 years of field experience. Full disclosure... I am one of the authors. Code Check 8th Edition literally takes several thousand pages of the building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes and pulls out the most commonly used codes - then we summarize them in an easy to use 32 page laminated flip style book. They are designed for use in either the office or field.Some of the critical comments are that the codes are summarized. There is no other way to fit a few thousand pages into 32 - unless we used REALLY small print! lol Also, the separate code books would cost 100's of dollars to buy and then you would have to be able to find the code citation you wanted. We also pull out info that is only found in standards documents and summarize them in Code Check as well. For example, the SMACNA heating duct support standard costs over $200 to but. The info from it is summarized in Code Check as part of the $21.95 price.One issue I find confusing is some of the reviews. There are reviews on this book from 2014 - which is impossible. We didn't start writing CC 8th edition until 2016. This edition uses the most commonly adopted model codes in effect today in the US. I hope you enjoy! -Skip

I do a lot of projects around the house and this book has been extremely helpful. Explanations are clear and it provides examples to help explain why the code exists. Understanding the reasoning behind the code makes it much easier for me to remember. New code from previous versions is highlighted in blue to make it clear what has changed.There are picture examples of most items that also make it easy to assess. I had version two of the book and was impressed at how much they were able to consolidate into version 8. The entire book is about the size of a thin notebook and is printed on a material that will hold up to the less than ideal conditions of a job site.Certainly not an exhaustive list of code requirements but

Better than the last version. Uber-helpful for inspectors, contractors, architects, engineers, and the like. I give one to each new trainee and instruct them to keep it with them on every inspection. Easy to use, read, find, locate, and diagnose issues. I especially love the abbreviation key at the beginning.

Very nice compilation of codes. As a home inspector, I like this condensed reference. It makes good use of illustrations, notes and references.

I acted as my own general contractor building our new home and the local building department recommended I get one of these. It is very straight forward to use and much better than trying to wade through the actual code. If you are totally naive to building code, as were we, you will have to look up a few of the terms, but that's easy. Using this I was able to completely install the house's electrical, plumbing, heating, and railings on my own (we used sub-contractors for the foundation, framing, insulation, and drywall).

I had an idea what to expect prior to getting the book. I alread own a previous version of the electrical code. I did find, however, that the section dealing with electrical code was smaller than the full electrical code book, and imagine it's the same with the other sections. No matter, you will still learn the basics that a homeowner should know prior to undertaking any work that will have to be inspected.

My husband is a contractor and I bought this for him. He loves them and they are easy to navigate and reference for his projects. He has not need to do extended research it answers all his questions. The book and all the pages are laminated so its durable and he can keep it in his work van. Perfect guide!

Excellent Format, Quality, Lightweight easy to carry to jobsite. I am a Certified Professional Inspector for homes and this is very useful for looking up code references and great diagrams and organized well by trades. Very good to use but I always advice you know what Code year and amendments your AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) Uses and make sure you get the Code Check book that applies.
