Written by Nan Sterman, who also writes a gardening column for the San Diego Union-Tribune and is the leader of a San Diego County FaceBook gardening group. Lots of good ideas for plant selection and garden design in semi-desert areas such as San Diego, Orange, and LA counties. I bought the Kindle edition and the photos are great.

Mostly California & Arizona type plants (really dry, desert-like), with sensitivity to "mild" cold temperatures (48 degrees and below). Look for something else if you're not in these areas. Here in Austin TX, perennial plants usually tolerate colder temps. The photos are fine and offer some inspiration, there are other better references. I saw this book & author on PBS "Central Texas Gardener" and don't recall any mention of specific states.

I was very turned off when words like “froufrou” and gushed were used at the beginning of this book. There are a lot of photographs that seem out of focus. I am a plantaholic and love reading books on designing gardens for the desert Southwest, but I did not enjoy this book.

I read a review of this book, raving about the ideas and plant possibilities. I live in New Mexico, and found the selection and types of plants limited to the California planting zone. I would not buy again, even if I lived in California, because the ideas were not all that new, creative, or helpful.

Beautiful book by a designer who has a wonderful eye for design and sustainability. My only regret is buying the kindle version not the book! Gorgeous photos and ideas!

Decent information and helpful with our yard transformation.Removed lawn completely and doing combo of raised beds and large pots.Good plant info.

For California drought conditions. I really enjoyed reading this book and looking at lots of photos.

Since I live in Arizona where it is hot, it did not cater to the southwest as I thought it might.
