Very interesting book.Unlike John McClure's "Soldier Without Fortune", this book has an ring of truth to it (and REAL pictures)!Very interesting book.Unlike John McClure's "Soldier Without Fortune", this book has an ring of truth to it (and REAL pictures)! Also, just to put things in perspective, this is the breakdown of opposing forces:According to mercenary-wars.net...."At the time, the two forces matched up as follows:Armed Forces of Suriname2,500 personnel (approx.)1) Cascavels - a Brazilian-made six-wheel armored car with a 90 mm gun and laser range finder2) Urutus - another Brazilian-made six-wheeled armored car equipped with a .50-caliber machine gun3) YPs - a Dutch-manufactured DAF two-man scout car4) S-class boats - a Dutch-built coastal patrol boat (approximately 30 meters long) with 2 x 40 mm Bofors cannons plus machine guns5) MAGs - 7.62 mm machine guns6) FN-FALs - 7.62 mm rifles manufactured in Belgium or Brazilian copies7) Defenders - Britten-Norman Islander aircraft (military versions)Jungle Commando250 personnel (maximum)1) 40 fire extinguishers2) 250 sticksPlus Karl Penta and a small handful of European mercenaries. This would have gotten a 5-star except for the fact (IMO) that the writing is a bit dry as it (a) is the normal British style that I often see and (b) Karl is actually a pretty unassuming person - when none considers the scenario and situations and conditions faced.Note, this is the SAME book as "A Mercenary's Tale" by this same author. Just a hardcover version (published in England in 2001 as "A Mercenary's Tale") and a separately later published paperback (published in America in 2003 under this name).
This is one of his best book ever and now have all his books. He is one of the best authors ever.
I read this book after stumbling over it at Amazon.I was part of the last grope that went in there with "Psycho", John Richards in 89.Actually I left the foreign legion on Friday and was in Surinam fighting on Monday, long story. The part in the book about that part of the war, where Karl was not present, is not accurate. I do not blame him since he only writes what has been widely reported other places: Soldier of Fortune (If I remember correctly it was the 20th anniversary issue), in English newspapers (The Sun), French RAIDS and probably a few other. The way John died is however accurate in the book; the guys that did it have even admitted it on the ITV show: 'Murder In The Jungle' Cook Report 27th June 1995".For me personally lots of information about before and after my own involvement was very interesting. The "Cubans" that I always was under the impression was from "the Agency" suddenly make sense, still chuckle of their names: Alfa Charlie and Papa Mike!I still wonder what happened to the crazy French merc we meet there, called correctly enough "Madman".As for Karl I have never meet him but all the rebels I talked to had high regards of him, Rebel leader Ronny, little Michel Jackson, Castro and the entire voodoo crowd. It is a really good and true adventure book. With so much fiction and war books being sold I am amazed this one is not more popular. If you want to read a book what real mercenary work is like (compared to military contractor work that any Tom Dick and Harry, and the rest of us, are into now) I truly recommend this book. The book it self read like a movie, and it is a shame it has not been a movie because fact are often stranger that fiction."Palle" Someplace in Africa
After buying this book in a cooky crime book store in Melbourne, I found myself unable to do anything but read it for the following few days. 'Karel' tells an amzaing, simply-written tale about his time in Surinam during the mid-80's where he lead an army destined to break the back of the country's dictatorial government. If you like a good, factual action story that is engaging and fast moving, then I highly recommend this. The only downfall is that it wasn't long enough!
