While you can find these articles scattered in JAMA, this collection is superbly presented -- and is actually well written. So much of the medical writing that I read is absolutely stultifying in its accuracy -- yawn. The topics and vignettes presented in this collection are great! I used this book to help prepare for my boards in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine -- and still refer to it since my exam -- which says alot (too many books are designed to help one pass an exam rather than provide the foundation for genuine learning). I also like the fact that this book contains stand-alone chapters -- much more like digestible short stories rather than a whole novel. This was important to me as I rarely have the luxury of reading for hour upon hour. Anyway -- kudos to JAMA for putting out this great collection of articles in a highly readable and organized form!

I ordered this book - the kindle one for mine and a hard copy one for my university library. First seen, I impressed in printing quality, nice colored drawing ,though the book size is not handy. I hope these will attractive readers even who novice in palliative care (esp. med students). About the contents, each article is unique harmonized evidence based and "perspective" from palliative medicien experts in north america.Even there are contributed with data and clinical reference, this book is not "quick cookbook guideline". Instead, each article has narrative that take time to digest. It useful in providing context for critical reader to apply in their own setting "close of life patient".

I'm an RN and this is the best book out for end of life care. Gave it to our daughter who is in Palliative care (MD)and she is using it to give to the Fellows she is teaching!

I now have a copy of Care at the Close of Life sitting by my bed as my preferred night time reading. It is richer than many volumes of fiction and poetry, but unlike imaginative literature consists of real narratives, with tools, analysis, references, board review-type questions, even vocabulary. I am convinced reading Care at the Close of Life has already contributed to my practice of the art of medicine, and will do so further. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to teach or practice palliative medicine.
