Review
"If success has many fathers...Augustus Herring has been cheated outof his rightful place in the family portrait of flight pioneers...Today a handful of historians wish that Herring had said 'I flew.' 'Thataccomplishment should have put St. Joseph, Michigan...on the map, Gierke said.  'The state of Michigan and the city of St. Joseph could makeahelluva good case to have been first in flight, taking that away fromNorth Carolina.'" - John Matuszak, The Herald-Palladium, St. Joseph, Michigan "IMPRESSIVE...what honest, thorough, accurate, research produces...the truth!  After enjoying reading "ToCaress the Air"by C. David Gierke and letting it sink in for about amonth I have come to therealization that, in my mind, Augustus M.Herring flew a heavier than airplane in 1898 long before the WrightBrothers claim to "controlled flight". What is the opposite of controlled flight...uncontrolled flight andcrashing?  Herring had controlled flight with body shifting and hisregulator...just as modern hang glider bodyshifting pilots do today." - Paul F. Geders, Senior Supportability Specialist (Retired), The Boeing Co. Historical adventure andexploration novels take many forms and "To Caress the Air" is one of the best.If you are looking for an interesting, highly detailed account of the times andtechnology of early aeroplane development, David Gierke's two-volumebiographical novel of Augustus Herring is the book for you. The author combines anovelist's suspense and an historian's accuracy with style and solid research, adding much to the literature addressing the on-going question of who reallyinvented the airplane. Gierke's descriptive,well-researched account sets a high standard for aeronautical history buffswith engaging and highly informative descriptions of Herring's personaltriumphs and tribulations, as he sought to conquer the achievement of powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight, including some notorious legal battles onterra firma.  "To Caress the Air" is a well-written "good read" with plentyof detail that reveals the human side of Augustus Herring, a heretofore littleknown and much-neglected aviation pioneer. - Gordon Schimmel, Ed. The extent of Gus Herring’s genius is made fully apparent in Book Two, as is the deceit of his detractors. During his encounter with the Wright brothers at Kill Devil Hills in 1902, it is obvious who is the engineer and who are mere mechanics. Gus’s intellect is only eclipsed by his humility – he was a never-ending source of ideas to solve the problem of flight, but in no way did he attempt to put himself above his contemporaries. As a result, Gus had been left behind and his accomplishments covered up for over 100 years by the lesser-deserving big names in the history of aviation, until Gierke’s books brought this inequity to light. The chronicle of Herring’s time in St. Joseph, Michigan, reveals that it was not only the site of some of Gus’s most significant accomplishments, but also the place where he suffered his most devastating setback. Gierke exposes the dark side of the Wrights, with their need for control culminating in legal actions that stalled the growth of the US aeroplane industry during WWI, and their covert contract negotiated with the Smithsonian in the late 1940s. Information presented in this second installment should shake up the conventional wisdom about who invented the airplane and how much credit has been denied to many of its “daddies,†as Herring calls the men who solved problems and set the foundation for an industry that literally calls the sky the limit today. In Book Two, Gierke’s research, analysis and writing continue to impress. The story moves along straight away, relentlessly capturing and holding the reader’s interest. This part of Gus’s story is even better than Book One. The courtroom drama really ramps up, fully illustrating the contempt between the litigants. The flashbacks highlighting Herring’s innovations, shown through his process of understanding of the problem of powered flight and consideration of solutions are impressive. Again, Gierke excels in his explanations of the technology with accompanying drawings. In the Epilogue, Gierke presents insightful analysis – don’t miss it.Daughter Chloe’s unflagging support of her father during the trial and in continuing the case to its final resolution serves as an inspiration to contemporary women. The outcome of the court action is the result of an unexpected, authentic circumstance and offers a stunning conclusion to Augustus Herring’s story.Well done!
Historical adventure and exploration novels take many forms and “To Caress the Air†is one of the best. If you are looking for an interesting, highly-detailed account of the times and technology of early aeroplane development, David Gierke’s two-volume biographical novel of Augustus Herring is the book for you.The author combines a novelist’s suspense and an historian’s accuracy with style and solid research, adding much to the literature addressing the on-going question of who really invented the airplane.Gierke’s descriptive, well-researched account sets a high standard for aeronautical history buffs with engaging and highly informative descriptions of Herring’s personal triumphs and tribulations, as he sought to conquer the achievement of powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight, including some notorious legal battles on terra firma. “To Caress the Air†is a well-written “good read†with plenty of detail that reveals the human side of Augustus Herring, a heretofore little-known and much-neglected aviation pioneer.Gordon Schimmel, Ed.D.Academy of Model Aeronautics
Gierke’s Book Two of “To Caress The Air†brings a conclusion to the fascinating and heretofore untold story of Augustus Herring and his many significant contributions to the solution of manned powered flight. The facts are meticulously researched and interwoven with a detailed narrative that brings this story to life. Gierke’s ability to clearly explain complex scientific principles in layman’s terms stand the reader in good stead as the story comes to a fascinating conclusion. Book Two brings all the issues from Book One together to show the genius of Herring and how he was unfairly cheated out his legacy by the oft cited “inventors†of the aeroplane. These two volumes expose their egos and greed as never before.Gierke deserves a huge amount of praise for bringing this injustice to light and setting the record straight.Eminently readable and well done, these two volumes are a must read for anyone interested in the history of early aviation! Two thumbs up.
The adventure of flight with Augustus Herring at the controls continues from book one. It seems to me Herring wanted nothing more than to advance the state-of-the-art of flying machines. Instead heran into people who for various reasons wanted Herring to fail. Book two explains many of the ingenious power plant and aircraft testing devices Herring invented. Dave did a great job writing these two books.
Book Two continues with the fascinating story of Augustus Herring and further delves into the genius that he was. Augustus Herring had ideas that were unheard of for this time in history but that didn't stop him from bringing them to life. The book cleverly steps back in time as Gus is testifying during his trial to explain to the reader what happened in the years leading up to the trial. It makes the reader stop and think about the injustices Gus suffered at the hands of people who were clearly determined to stop him because of the advances Gus had made while they did not make the same advances. Gus suffered tremendous losses and serious health issues but nothing stopped him from pursuing his dreams and what he envisioned was possible. The Epilogue written by the author clearly again shows how much research the author did in completing the two books and actually makes the reader want more from the author to learn even more about Augustus Herring and to also learn more about his daughter, Chloe, who stood by his side when most of the public thought he was filled with crazy ideas. The pictures and illustrations throughout the book give the reader more insight into the work that Augustus Herring was doing. Including the old photographs is a wonderful way for the reader to feel further connected with the story on a personal level and the reader will find themselves cheering for Gus to succeed.
