About the Author

Carol Spencer worked for several years as a fashion designer and illustrator in the apparel industry before beginning her illustrious career at Mattel as a fashion designer for Barbie in 1963. For thirty-five years, Carol created thousands of designs for the iconic doll and watched as Mattel grew from a small business into a multi-national conglomerate. From seeing Paris fashion shows to running the Hong Kong design group in the 1980s, Carol has been around the world with Barbie. Since retiring in 1998, she has continued to reside in Los Angeles with her impressive personal collection of Barbie dolls.

I just finished reading this book and genuinely enjoyed it. The book is very well designed- big, colorful photos, interesting captions. It is a quick read. The early history of Barbie (R) fashion design is told by design lead Carol Spencer, who was key in the Barbie world throughout the 70’s and 80’s. As a designer in an in-house creative group, I found her stories fascinating...having to navigate the internal creative approval process, being a woman in a manufacturing industry, and designing for cost and efficiency. It was really interesting and surpassed my expectations. I think this book would be interesting for anyone in a design profession, regardless of whether or not you are a Barbie (R) collector.

Carol Spencer has been a fixture for not just the 35 years at Mattel but for years and years after in the Barbie collectors world. Carol has blessed the conventions with her programs, designs, collection and awards. The book is high quality, large and filled with an endearing story of her life with Mattel. Worth every penny and more!
