LIBRARY JOURNALThe Book of the Dead is a collection of writings that were placed in tombs as a means of guiding the ancient Egyptian soul on its journey to the afterlife. The Papyrus of Ani, which is reproduced here, is one of the most important and beautiful of the surviving papyri. Damage in the 19th century seriously confused its sequencing and the relationship between text and illustrations. Here for the first time the scroll is presented in its proper sequence and in its entirety. The English text is placed immediately underneath the corresponding hieroglyphs, and the reproductions are faithful to the originals in all their glowing color. A critical purchase for any serious collection of materials on ancient Egypt.ROBERT S. BIANCHI, ARCHAEOLOGYThe Egyptian Book of the Dead is a remarkable volume. It is based on the Papyrus of Ani, which, with the exception of the Rosetta Stone, is the most famous Egyptian object in the collections of the British Museum. Its fame is due in no small part to the quality of the illustrated vignettes that rank among the masterpieces of ancient Egyptian painting. . . I, for one, would hope that readers will henceforth refrain from relying on Budge\'s outdated editions and turn to this volume instead. The price, under $25 dollars paperback; the quality of the large-format plates, several of which include foldouts; the authoritative translation based on that of R.O. Faulkner, which is considered in the opinion of many experts to be one of the best translations, and commentary by Ogden Goelet make this book a must for all libraries.PUBLISHERS WEEKLYThe Papyrus of Ani -- The Book of Going Forth by Day, created around 1250 B.C.E., is the best surviving example of some 200 texts comprising the funerary scrolls that accompanied deceased Egyptians into the afterlife. The Egyptian Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth by Day presents the complete papyrus, photographed from an 1890 facsimile edition, with an English translation by the late Raymond O. Faulkner.NAPRA TRADE JOURNALThis magnificent book is the first complete presentation of the Papyrus of Ani, featuring graphics that reveal beautifully the texture of the original papyrus, coupled with the translated text. The original papyrus, on its discovery, was cut into sections for transport. The careless cutting of uneducated workers left the manuscript almost indecipherable, and to date only sections of it have been made available to the public. Computer imaging allowed the papyrus to be pieced into its original state, and a faithful translation was then possible. This document is precious not only for its historic significance, but also for its glimpse into the ancient Egyptian religion and its teachings about the passage from life to death. Commentaries and other notes make this work even more accessible. A spectacularly beautiful work of devotion.

It's very difficult to see the world from the point of view of the ancient Egyptians. I think it's easier to understand the ancient Sumerian culture, like "The Epic of Gilgamesh". This lavish edition of the Egyptian book of the dead, together with The Tale of Sinuhe, finally allowed me to have some understanding of how the ancient Egyptians saw the world. The story of Osiris being dismembered, his organs scattered up and down the Nile, and how his sisters, Nephthys and you-know-who, collected his organs and strapped them into his body, holding them in place by wrapping him up as a mummy, helps to explain why the Egyptians preserved the organs inside the tombs. (This is referred to on page 157.) If Osiris could be resurrected in this way and have eternal life, then surely a person of good enough character could do the same. The tale of Sinuhe shows how passionately the ancient Egyptians desired to have a tomb, to give them a chance of immortality in "the Field of Reeds" as depicted in Plate 34.The best way to read this book, I think, is to read the plate-by-plate notes on pages 154-170 in close conjunction with plates 1-37. Otherwise the plates make little sense. I wish I had known about these notes before I read through all of the plates and all of the Theban Recension. Before even looking at the plates, maybe it's best to read the notes on pages 137-154 first. The Theban recension is really difficult to read through. It required great discipline for me to work through that.By the way, my favourite character in the Egyptian book of the dead is Anubis. In the Tale of the Eloquent Peasant (in the Tales of Sinuhe book), the peasant ends about 10 days of complaints at the royal court by saying that since he is not being taken seriously, he will go and complain to Anubis instead. This was his way of saying that he would commit suicide, so that he would meet Anubis. I think Anubis has more character than the other gods. This book should be a welcome addition to anyone's personal library, especially as a gift. It can be seen as a magnificent artwork which has thankfully survived some 3500 years, or as a time-capsule of the way of thinking of the ancient Egyptians. The fact that people were willing to pay so much money to have the book specially copied and personalized for their own use after death shows just how important this was in their lives. In tales of the time, employees of the royal court were granted tombs as a special favour, a bit like giving out a knighthood or a country estate as a reward for services rendered. In 3500 years from now, I'm sure that our own culture in this century will seem as incomprehensible as the Egyptian book of the dead does to us now.I have only one tiny complaint about this book. There's no index! And by the way, the price of this book is so low, I would buy a copy quick before the publishers realise their mistake!
This is a lovely over-sized copy of The Papyrus of Ani, one ancient scribe's rendering of the Egyptian Book of the Dead (or, the Book of Going Forth By Day). The artwork as well as the text on the scroll are both reprinted in full here. The reprints are beautiful and worth the price all by themselves. The prints appear at the top of the page, and the spells at the bottom. The commentary in the back was not quite as insightful as I'd have liked, and because of the book's size, was a little awkward to read (to flip from the prints and spells in the first half to the commentary in the back). Still, I'm very happy with this purchase, which brought me closer to humble Ani's wish for life after death for himself and his wife.
I have to say I am very pleased with my copy of The Egyptian Book of the Dead. I like the oversized coffee table format, and the reproduction of the original papyrus' artwork is outstanding. The English translation of the hieroglyphics is also very good. This book gives IMO a very good feel for the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. My only real complaint is that the book is not in hardback format. That being said, I highly recommend this book..
A traveling King Tut show came to town and thus began the interest in symbols being used for communicating. This is a coffee table beautiful book that people cannot put down if they have interest in Egyptian history.I cannot read all the inscriptions when I go to the museum but I have a much greater appreciation for the art of it and am able to follow a good portion of the "story".Some man kept following me at the museum as I talked with my husband and he actually thought I could read all of the inscriptions. It's a great start with good photography for the newly interested.
This is an excellent edition. The image quality is spectacular and the size permits significant analysis of each vignette without straining the eye. The commentary for each vignette is in the back of the book, which means a lot of page flipping, but it assures that the reader is not overwhelmed by the analysis (which is illuminating for the novice and scholar alike). The book is quite complete: the glossary is to-the-point but pretty complete, chapters that don't appear in this version of the Book of the Dead are included in the back, and the translation is accessible and well-explained. You can study the book for years, given the richness of resources contained in the book. A beautiful edition to any private library, and a great window into a fascinating past.
It really is every bit as beautiful and thorough as others have commented. No complaints at all.
Arrived promptly and as described. Seller is great, but anyone buying the book, it is huge.. the dimensions were listed, but when you see it in context to the rest of an average library. Phew. Lol, wish it were smaller.
Good job taking such a massive body of work and bringing it forward in a way that isn't too complicated. Easier to read than most Eqyptian books. Really great pictures. I was expecting a little more detailed text. A few paragraphs for a wall of symbols and pictures wasn't as satisfying as I had hoped. However, very well done for such a complex, difficult subject and I'm glad I purchased, it's a keeper.
