About the Author

Between the two of them, Bill McRae and Judy Jewell have lived in and traveled around Oregon for more than 50 years. During this time, they've also strayed out of state to research and write Moon guides to Montana, Utah, and southern Utah's national parks (like Zion and Bryce).As they turned their attention to Moon Coastal Oregon, Bill admitted that he was up for a trip (or three) to Yachats. And Judy was eager to return to Brookings, where she'd worked for the Forest Service back in the 1980s. "I could go surfing!" she realized. This book has the right amount of detail for seeing the sights along the Oregon coast. My parents lived in Portland so I’ve made trips to various locations along the coast. In my experience, this guide was a good about picking out the highlights and what to skip. i will be making the trip in September with someone who hasn’t been to the coast. I didn’t want to miss something I may not know about.

Excellent guide. Witty. Many items of useful information: e.g. Where shark attacks are more likely. And useless tidbits: e.g. how Depot Bay got its name. And preferences: e.g. most OR coast clam chowder is bland; avoid eating where everything but the salads (if you can get them) are deep-fried.McRae's description & evaluations of places I know seem about right.con. Didn't say what a great place is Fathoms restaurant, Inn at Spanish Head, Lincoln city. We always have at least one meal there when we ar near Lincoln City. Their lunch costs the same as a much lesser place. Delicious food, SUPERB service, excellent view, and comfortable seating.

I loved this so much I bought the Northern California guide and love that just as much. Other guides were too general or too much detail on lodging and eating and not enough on the area in general. The Moon Handbooks have just the right amount of detail with just the right amount of options as to what there is to do in the area. Plus it describes the cities and areas in very user friendly, applicable way. I researched the lodging choices from the guide on the internet and the book gives you a really nice variation. I don't find books that list page after page of all the lodging options in small print without any insight on them helpful. This highlights a few great choices in each price range and were all places I would choose to stay. This book would be useful in exploring and experiencing your destination.

We used the Moon Oregon Handbook for guidance on a driving trip from the eastern border of Oregon near Boise, ID, to Bend OR via US 26, (stayed 3 nights) and on to Silverton (1 night) and Portland (5 nights). We appreciated the book's advice to see John Day fossil beds-Painted Hills, the High Desert Museum, Oregon Gardens, Silver Falls State Park. We wished the guide had mentioned the times of services at Mount Angel Abbey. We dropped off the rental car when we first arrived in Portland and never missed it afterwards. Though the book mentions the city's "excellent mass transit" it neglected to say that it is free (!) downtown. Overall, though, we were quite satisfied with the scope, accuracy and tone of the book and we loved this slice of Oregon.

and found it useful. I liked not having to lug a big book and instead just having it on the ipad. Also, the phone numbers I used were up to date and I used the addresses for accurate GPS directions. There was one very fun kayak trip we took I would have never known about had it not been for this guide. It was relatively new and not advertised anywhere else publicly that I saw.The only thing that would have made it better is more detailed and expandable maps.

Before this weekend I'd only read the book, but hadn't actually tested it out yet. I live in Eugene and I've been to Ashland many times before, so when I looked through the pages for those places the book seemed pretty accurate, even though it came out in 2012. I've enjoyed reading it and learning about different places in Oregon, however this weekend my husband and I went to Bend, Oregon and so I got to test this book out. Unfortunately it did not pass. For the under $50 lodging it said that Bend Value Inn was a "reasonable bet." Yeah, there was nothing reasonable at all about this motel. It was dirty, dark, scary, and smelled so bad of cigarette smoke (even though it was a non-smoking room). We asked to try other rooms but they were all awful. It was relatively cheap, but not worth staying there and risking getting a disease. The only good thing is that they gave us a refund so we could go stay somewhere else. Strike one for the book! I can't believe this motel was even mentioned, let only touted as a "reasonable bet." Second strike was that Tumalo Falls, a 97 foot waterfall close to town that's easy to access, wasn't even mentioned in the book. They mentioned the Tumalo Falls camping area, but not the waterfall. I mean, how can that happen? I recommend the waterfall, it was neat. So, two strikes against the book. The other things for Bend seemed to be OK though. I think I will still use the book, but with much more caution than before.

Fantastic resource! Used this book throughout our whole trip for sites to see, restaurants to eat at, and local events to go see.

For me, Moon travel books are essential for any vacation. In fact, they've changed the way I vacation. The Oregon Moon book is no exception. Its well organized and an easy read, with "must see" attractions highlighted at the beginning of every section making it easy to select which activities to plan. Its not too detailed with excessive information - just he right amount to help you decide what to do on your trip. This a I recommend any Moon travel guide for any trip you take.
