Review

"The illustrations by mother-daughter team Hill and Pennypacker add depth to the story...Deeper colors are used to depict the couple and infant children in happier times. Shaded pictures and silhouettes add to the feelings of deception, desertion, and despair that came later. Best if read aloud. Recommended to all libraries and bookstores."―Críticas "This new edition features much larger, full-color illustrations destined to make the story even more popular, as well as the direct narration in both Spanish and English. This belongs in every folktale collection, and libraries serving Hispanic children, especially those of Mexican descent, can easily justify purchasing multiple copies."―Kirkus Reviews "This story packs a punch in both English and the author's fluid Spanish translation...A solid retelling of a classic tale."―School Library Journal "This story is presented in both English and Spanish, and has a companion audiocassette. The richly detailed illustrations in brown hues capture the town, its residents, and their clothing."―Multicultural Children's Literature "This popular Hispanic legend is told here in both Spanish and English and warns children about the dangers of venturing out past their bedtimes...This book would be useful in multicultural and/or language arts lessons."―Children's Literature "The traditional Latino story of a cast-off wife who drowns her children, dies of grief, and spends each night thereafter stalking the riverbank as a wailing ghost finds corporeality in this bilingual picture book. Hayes' sentences are compact but evocative; he limits the ghostly effects, making this telling more suitable for timid youngsters than creepier versions, but there's still plenty of pathos in the drama."―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Book "Even though this is a printed book, you can imagine Hayes telling the story aloud, surrounded by kids in a shadowy room, perhaps with only a blazing fireplace for light, and as he concludes the tale, the kiddies shiver and move a little closer..."―The Santa Fe New Mexican "Joe Hayes is considered one of the authorities on the story and has retold it countless times. He's also authored a version recently reissued in hardback, which tells the infamous story in both Spanish and English."―McAllen Monitor " Every child who ever heard the tale of La Llorona knows that she is still out there, wailing and looking for her children -- or maybe someone else's. Young readers with a vivid imagination can't go wrong with a Joe Hayes storybook. He is a good read any time of year. You don't have to wait for ghosts to come knocking or howling."―El Paso Times

This is a great book! I recall the stories of La Llorona when I was a child. La Llorona lives in many Mexican songs and her story captures your imagination. It is very cleverly written. At first glance I was worried the story may be too frightening for my grandchildren but the author handles La Llorona's death very well. While the title refers to "The Weeping Woman", as I was told, La Llorona's wail, howl and anguish could be heard late at night. Be sure, she did not merely weep! The story is about a very vain woman and vain man who live in Mexico and get married. Unfortunately, in time the husband loses interest in his wife (the vain woman) and devotes his attention to their two children. The wife, La Llorona, becomes jealous and decides to seek revenge by throwing their children in a river. This story has been around for many, many years and still serves the purpose of getting kids in the house before dark when La Llorona has been heard wailing as she looks for her children. Hurry home before La Llorona mistakes you for one of her unfortunate children!

The weeping woman is traditional Latin American tale to scare children. This rendition is great. It open up doors to conversing with your children or your students about the bigger issues in this book. Such topics, as obsession, narcissism, arrogance, vengeance, control and domination call be discussed with this book. The book is bilingual which is a plus, but the Spanish is pretty simple for native speakers. Non-native beginner and intermediate students will find it a little challenging. It is story that never gets old. It also fun to tell, because many believe it to be true from the time of "la malinche". She helped Cortez conquer hers and other native peoples of the new world. It is a little too violent for really young children, but it is a scary story so use your discretion in telling this tale to children under 7.

The story is traditional and interesting. Spanish is right next to the English, so you could start with either one.

i like the author and the illustrations, seems to be an accurate rendition of the legend

I was surprised how much my class enjoyed this story and how spooky they thought it was as fourth graders.

This book is a great version for younger children who you don't want to scare too much with this story.

GREAT BOOK that doesn't sugar-coat the story at all- A sad story, but good to tell for groups of OLDER school-age children. If you are able, ask a colleague to don a woman's halloween mask and a white sheet... have them enter the room toward the end of the story- or at the end- works every time! Sure, upper graders in this day and age can be a little jaded, but don't let that stop you! They will appreciate this.

It came in really nice shape and sooner than I expected!! Love that service! I will definetly consider it for my next buy :)
